Basingstoke, England
Population:
152,000
Worst Feature:
Famous for its brewing skills, that and the many exit roads.
Best Feature:
An inundation of overspill people from London ever since the 1960’s
An alternative name for Basingstoke, apart from the obvious Boringstoke, is
‘Doughnut city’ because at almost every junction there are roundabouts. One
urban myth tells of the bright young lady hitchhiker standing near one such
junction bearing a large of piece of card with the plea, ‘Anywhere but
Basingstoke!’
The most exciting things that ever happened here happened
hundreds of years ago – the witch trial in 1657 – on the scarcest of
evidence and the accidental burying of a Mrs Blunden in 1764. They do
however have a local radio station. There are however a large number of bars
in comparison to the size of the population – presumably they are all
drowning their sorrows.
