Beziers, South of France – should be nice. The local tourist office will be
glad to point you to the high spots or find a hotel room. But like too many
French cities it also has ‘jeunes des banlieues’ – dissatisfied young
people, many of them ‘beurs’ i.e of North African descent, often the first
generation children of migrants, who live in the high rise flats that
surround the city. And as they grow older they join gangs and terrorize
their own neighbours as well as citizens further a field. They live amongst
those with one of the world’s best standards of living – yet many of these
young people see no future. It is not just in the third world where young
people feel rejected by society
