Stockport, England
Population:
284,017 - Stockport was once the largest town in Cheshire, a crown it no
longer holds – as everyone wants out.
Best Feature:
The people, characters one and all
Worst Feature:
Worst thing would you like a list? Filthy streets for one thing. The street
cleaners do their best, but somehow always fail to keep up. One recently
told me that St Helen’s , a town of a similar size has three times the
number of street cleaners. This, combined with the very high number of
takeaways, means a constant supply of left over curry, chip papers etc.
Walking through Grand Central, the town’s entertainment centre, can be
positively hazardous. For those who decide to stay there is a problem with
the closure of schools – to the point where there is a big margin between
the number of senior places for the number of children – queues go round the
block and last all night when it is enrolment day at a particularly popular
school.
