Like many former coal and steel towns worldwide, when the industry leaves
the city suffers and Merthyr Tydfil in Wales is no exception.
Since the coals mines closed down decades ago and the last steel mill closed
in the 1980’s, much like Pittsburgh in The States, Merthyr has been on a
steady decline. Crime, poverty, unemployment and teen pregnancy are rampant,
as is drug abuse.
They rank 5th in the country overall in education with only a fraction over
30% of the population with the equivalent of a high school education.
Life expectancy is also poor, due to the toxic legacy of the coal mining and
steel industries, which has left more than 30% of the population suffering
from some type of long term or debilitating illness.
Oh yes and they also could buy a vowel or two for their name.
