Lagos, Nigeria
Population:
Lagos is the most populous conurbation in
Nigeria with 7,937,932 - expected population of 18 million by 2010, when it
will be ranked as one of the world's ten largest cities.
Worst Feature:
Overcrowding
(with an average of six people per room), poor sanitation, air and water
pollution, clogged sewers, solid-waste contamination, and staggering traffic
fester even as efforts are being made to improve the national and city
infrastructures in a time of political turmoil.
The police
from Ketu division are likely to visit you at night, knock your doors (or
bust it down) and make illegal arrest and demand for bribe of 200 naira for
each of the detainees to be released. Living in abject poverty in what
should be a reasonably wealthy city is not a great deal of fun either!!
Best Feature:
The public beach near the city at Tarkwa Bay, a sheltered coastline where
you can swim safely just six kilometers from the city center.
