The former Soviet Union is not the only ones who were involved in some nasty
weapons development, and are not alone in having left some areas of the
world downright unlivable because of it.
Though no Dzerzinsk, Hanford is a
pretty awful place to live in or near.
From WWII till about 1990, Hanford
was home to the production of plutonium for many of the United States
Weapons of Mass Destruction; including the original bombs dropped on Japan.
Because of the secrecy surrounding nuclear weapons production, the public
did not know much about Hanford's operational details until the late ‘80’s.
For decades those downriver form the “Hanford Site” were exposed to doses of
radiation both due to accidental and intentional release.
Declared an EPA
super fund site, Hanford is now the home to one the largest clean-up efforts
in the country, but even EPA officials are doubtful that the efforts will be
a success.
