Gary, Indiana USA
Population:
102,000
Worst Feature:
Gang Violence
Best Feature:
Since opening two gambling Casinos in the late 90’s you may be
able to find some prostitutes with all of their teeth – if you have a job
and can afford them.
Despite being the alleged alma mater of Professor Harold Hill in the
uplifting musical The Music Man – Gary, Indiana appears on just about every
“worst places” list you can find.
Gary has been described as a “sewer with a
population of about 100,000”. Like many other once prosperous steel towns,
Gary has been on a sickening downward spiral filled with drugs, crime and
unemployment since the 1960’s. In 2005 the murder rate in Gary was almost 9
times the national average. “Burned-out buildings, packs of wild dogs,
entire blocks of abandoned buildings, flooded streets, poor roads, garbage
in the streets, gangs and violence…”
A quote from a reporter on the front
lines in Iraq? Nope, that’s how a resident describes Gary on a recent blog
post. On the plus side, Michael Jackson was born there, but the
self-proclaimed King of Pop, has never expressed any interest in returning
to Gary, or using his money to help the decaying urban blight – maybe he is
afraid that if they start rebuilding Gary, someone will find his original
nose.
