While a tenuous peace has recently been signed, Abidjan Ivory Coast has been
torn by rebellion and Civil War for the past 5 years. Once one of the
wealthiest and most peaceful cities in Africa, Abidjan is now considered one
of the most dangerous cities on the continent, especially for women.
According to Amnesty International, perhaps thousands of women have been
butchered, rapped, sexually assaulted and sold into slavery since the
conflict began.
While UN Peace Keepers are present they have been unable to
control the regular flaring up of ethnic as well as rebel violence, and have
failed to maintain peace in the supposedly neutral "confidence zone".
Abidjan is a place posted in most airportss to be avodied for safety and
security reasons.
As if civil war, rape and other acts of violence were not
enough to earn Abidjan a place of “dishonor” on our list, in 2006 a ship
called the Probo Koala illegally dumped 500 Tons of Toxic Waste there
forcing tens of thousands to seek medical treatment, and resulting in the
deaths of at least 2 children which sparked another round of violent
demonstrations in Abidjan.
